The I Know Jack Foundation
The I Know Jack Foundation is a 501 c (3) is a non-profit organization inspired by our son Jack Hoeger. At age 5, Jack was diagnosed with a rare form of brain cancer. There was not protocol to treat his cancer and no survivors of his cancer. It wasn’t easy, but Jack fought hard and beat cancer! Cancer affected our entire family and we depended upon many people to help us at the time. Even though Jack is in remission , our family believes in continuing the fight against cancer. By telling Jack’s story, fundraising and lobbying for more cancer funding it allows us to spin cancer from a negative in our family to a positive.
To raise funds to support the cancer patient and their families from diagnosis through survivorship. Our goal is to raise awareness about cancer, support those affected by cancer, assist with cancer research and improve the survivor’s quality of life. We understand that cancer affects entire family and that it takes a community to beat cancer.
This will be the 8th year of the I Know Jack Fundraiser that will be held at the Veterans Coliseum in downtown Cedar Rapids April 8th, 2017. We have grown this event from a small open house dinner that had 100 people attend at our church to now renting the Veterans Coliseum with over 1000 people in attendance last year. In total our events have raised over $125,000.00!
The event begins with a social hour from 7-8 where people will visit and be able to view all of the silent auction items that have been collected over the year from several area companies and individuals. At 8 we will feature our first of two bands that will be playing that evening. The Roosevelts are a duo that travel from Nashville to participate in our event. The second band has become a local crowd favorite The Johnny Holm Band out of Minneapolis Minnesota. Music will be from 8-12 with breaks where we share stories, celebrate survivorship and announce winners of the raffles and silent auction items.
Not to be lost in the celebration we decorate the venue with information on area and national organizations that can help anyone who wishes to gain information on how each organization is able to help their situation. We have purposely designed this event to be a celebration of life of survivorship and celebrate the lives of those who have lost their fight with cancer.
Where do the funds go?:
The funds raised at our event in the past have been donated to The Livestrong Foundation, The American Cancer Society and the Helen G Nassiff Community Cancer Center in Cedar Rapids. Each non-profit offers different areas for the cancer patient. The Livestrong Foundation helps cancer patients with needs with insurance, provider questions and choices and life as a survivor. The American Cancer Society specializes in cancer research which is a vital for future cancer patients as federal funding gets cut every year it takes a grass roots effort to assure the funds are there for future research. The Helen G Nassiff Community Cancer Center offers local services to local cancer patients such as health and wellness classes, I know Jack packs which offers comfort items to the patient and educational items.
